“Sarah Palin is no wilting flower. She is a politician who took the national stage and sneered at the work of community activists. She boldly tries to pass off incuriosity and lassitude as regular-people qualities, thereby doing a disservice to all those Americans who also work two jobs and do not come from families that hand out passports and backpacking trips, yet still manage to pick up a paper and read about their government and seek out experience and knowledge.”

This is, by far, the best and fairest summary of the Palin phenomena that I have come across.

Every woman in America ought to read it.

Meanwhile, and I know it’s my Philadelphia sports fan mindset, but I am getting queasy about Thursday night. The Palin train wreck has been so complete and ongoing that it can’t continue. Granted, people do not, ultimately (which is to say, even this year) vote for the second place on the ticket, but if things go awry roughly 60 hours from now, the McCain Campaign cannot help but get some sort of boost and it is my devout wish that it continues to sink into the morass of its own making.

Kick ’em while they’re down and keep your other foot on their throats. It might be a bit hard to maintain balance that way, but the effort is worth the reward.

Apparently, one of the unshown parts of the Couric interview with Palin was that she could not name a single other Supreme Court case other than Roe V Wade.

I started thinking, ok, I took gummint classes many years ago and other than a career in law enforcement, how many cases could *I* think of, being a not much more than a high school graduate?

    Marbury V Madison
    Brown V Board of Education
    Mapp V Ohio
    Terry V Ohio
    Gideon
    Miranda
The case that ended the NRA for FDR
Separate but equal (Oliver Wendell Holmes writing for the majority)
    Dred Scott Decision

That’s right off the top of my head. How uncurious or unknowing can this woman be and still be running for Veep?

  2. I could only have come up with about five or so of those Carl lists (Mapp V Ohio and Terry V Ohio are completely off my radar- at least named this way), but then, I’m not running for public office. I’m willing to bet that most Evangelical Christian Rightwingnuts can’t name more than Roe V Wade- maybe Brown V Board of Ed- off the tops of their pointy heads either. It’s the mass level of incuriousness of that club that brings this about. This is the same group that swallows Obama=Musllim and Saddam=Al Qaida along with the Kool-aid. These are the folks that elected Dubya and have a chance of doing it for McCain/Palin too….

    Scary innit?

  3. FTR, the separate but equal decision is usually abbreviated “Plessey”…I don’t recall the name of the other party.

Most recent case she should have knowledge of is Heller v, District of Columbia. It’s the one that negated DC’s gun control laws. As a card-carrying NRA member, it’s appalling she doesn’t know it.

  4. Pat,

Dang, that is right. It is Plessy V Ferguson. Soon as I read Plessy I remembered the rest. I didn’t remember the one that you refer to about the gun control but yes, as an avid NRA member, you would think she should remember it.

Apparently, it was not in any newspapers at all! I know this, because on the CBS News tonight, she told Couric in response to a question on what newspapers and magazines she reads, she said, “All of them.”

Man, no wonder there is a paper shortage. She’s hogging it all.

  5. “All of them”? Even the ones in, say, Urdu? Even the magazines about, say, neuropathology? All the newspapers? The National Enquirer?

When does she find time to do anything else?

  6. Pat,

I am looking forward to this weekend’s new ep of SNL. I visualize Tina Fey absolutely surrounded by stacks of newspapers and magazine bemoaning the lack of time to read them all! I’ll be charitable and assume she only meant all of them that are in English as I suspect she has no language skills in any other language. In fact, I am not too impressed with her English language skills either since she seems incapable of adding the final “g” to any word ending in “ing”.

  7. I have to admit I am concerned that she has set the expectations so low that if she doesn’t vomit on on the moderator it will be considered a win. And please….I’ve been reading the Anchorage Daily News since she got in the limelight and I live in North Carolina, she couldn’t even think of that?
