Unless you be one a-them effete I-don’t-watch-no-sports-eww! types and/or an elitist television-is-for-the-wretched-masses types, today was a very good day here in Philadelphia for planting one’s self in front of the tube…and it ain’t over yet.
(Of course, it turned out to be one of the most beautiful days of the year to boot, so the smart folks all working in a nice walk outside as part of the activities.)
First we had us a sports double-header, the Philadelphia Eagles NFL opener against the St. Louis Rams and the Philadelphia Phillies vs. the New York Mets as part of the battle for first place in the Eastern Division.
Fortunately, the Eagles made it easy on us by kicking ass early and were up 21-0 by the time the baseball game came on. The Phillies in turn made it easy right back, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first four innings. Both won easily.
Yes, the Rams are truly wretched.
Yes, the Mets have established themselves as a choke-first, whine-later team.
But wins is wins.
And there’s lots more to go.
Tonight we we have the Phillies-Mets again (a rare day/night double-header resulting from yesterday’s torrential reminder of Gustav all over the East Coast) and if the Phillies win this one, sweeping the series and moving into a first place tie, look for the Mets, already being boo-ed by their fans this afternoon, to curl up in a ball an die.
You know, like they did last year.
Plus, tonight on HBO, we have the debut of a new show, a blood ‘n’ guts ‘n’ sex thing with vampires and nubile honeys from the guys who gave us the wonderful Six Feet Under, which means it got great promise. And it precedes the return of Entourage, every guy’s Favorite Show Ever.
And, over on AMC, there’s a new episode of Mad Men, the cult hit for all the cool kids.
Life is good.
(This has been a McCain/Palin free post; the meds are kicking in.)
